• Module 1: Introduction to Mayo Communities Caring for Water
• General introductions and participants expectations
• Training programme aims and objectives
• Benefits of understanding water catchments and creating a locally-led water and biodiversity initiative/project.
• Introduction to water catchments and waterbodies in the Moy & South Mayo regions.
• Introduction to developing a local area waterbody biodiversity plan (incorporating current and ongoing relevant plans such as pollinator plans, Tidy Towns plans, Green-Schools plans, climate adaptation etc.)
• Module 2: Understanding your Local Water (Field Trip)
• How our Rivers Catchments work?
• The Water Cycle - Sources of Freshwater
• Understanding Your Local Waterbody
• Rivers as Biodiversity Corridors (Biodiversity & Biology)
• The Riparian Zone – Connecting Land & Water
• Building climate reliance into waterbodies
• Module 3: Water Quality, Impacts & Solutions
• Introduction to water quality, the work of the Local Authority Waters Programme,(LAWPRO) the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the River Basin Management Plan
• Pressures Impacting on Water Quality Nationally & Locally.
• Water Supply and Wastewater – how systems work and how we all impact on local water quality? Describe what happens during flood events. Why is it so damaging to water quality?
• How we can work for our rivers/local water bodies and plan for climate change.
• Module 4: Citizen Science (Practical In-Stream Session and Classroom Session)
• What is Citizen Science?
• Training in the relevant Citizen Science scheme
• Biosecurity training – highlighting best practice for local actions
• Field based mentoring with follow up support
• Logging and archiving the data
• Module 5: Community-Led Water Projects & Plans
• How to identify and develop a site-specific project plan for your local stream, river, wetlands, lakes.
• Project planning skills for community groups to enhance local water bodies.
• Identify priority actions for the next three to five years, including short, medium and longer-term goals for the groups and the region.
• Implementing a site-specific management plan for your local waterbody.
• Building Sustainability – establishing a volunteer network to enhance local water bodies.
• Module 6: Finalise your Plan
• Community supported to develop their locally led waterbody protection/enhancement plan
