Water Demand Management and Climate Action
Killeen Group Water Scheme approved for €1,360,000 grant for upgrade works. 15% capital replacement charge (€600) now being collected from members.
Dear Scheme member,
Killeen Group Water Scheme exists as the sole provider of treated water in this locality.
It offers a community-based solution for water infrastructure, enabling access to clean and safe water for households, farms and businesses. We ensure the long-term sustainability of the water supply by managing our own scheme. We strive to protect the source, meet quality standards and ensure a reliable supply, using local knowledge and expertise in water management and source protection.
The network which delivers water to you is over 50 years in the ground and is long overdue an upgrade as our “Unaccounted for Water” is now over 40%, i.e. water being lost to network leaks.
Killeen Group Water Scheme have once again applied for Capital funding under the Multi Annual Rural Water Programme for the necessary upgrade works and this time have received approval. Procurement and management of these works will be overseen by Mayo County Council.
These works include a 10 kilometer replacement of sections of the 6 inch main artery from the plant which is essential to the supply of every connection on the scheme, together with the installation of further Bulk Meters, Scour Valves, Fire Hydrants and upgrading of existing customer meters. Failure to avail of this grant at this critical time will inevitably result in major water supply outages.
Funding for these works is given by the Department at 85% of the costs with an obligation on the members to pay a Capital Replacement Charge of 15%. This Charge must be collected from each member before Killeen GWS will be given approval to enter into a contract for the works.
Mayo County Council assessed our submission for the Grant and they estimated the costs of the entire works at approximately €1.6m. Killeen GWS were given approval for grant aid of €1,360,000 with an obligation to raise a 15% Capital Replacement Charge of €240,000 from the scheme members.
The Capital Replacement Charge towards the upgrade works, is separate to your water charges and is levied at €600 per account holder. Attached is your invoice for €600, showing details on how your payment can be made. Installment payments will be available for any account holder who requires same.
If you have any query in relation to the above, please contact Fiona on 087 1866756.
Yours sincerely,
Austin F O’Malley, Fiona Campbell, Co-Managers

29-5-2020 Information 2019 billing
Due to the Covid-19 emergency and subsequent nationwide lockdown, we held off on sending out the water bills for 2019 usage (normally posted out March). We felt people had enough stresses and financial strains to handle during this period. Thankfully the country is slowly coming out of that lockdown.
We will be sending out the 2019 water bills end of next week - to arrive week beginning 8th June 2020 (2nd phase of lifting lockdown restrictions).
If anyone has any questions or wishes to set up a payment plan please contact us on [email protected] or phone 087-1866756 to discuss.

Water supply disruptions March 2020
Sincere apologies for the huge inconvenience caused by the ongoing disruption to water supply since Friday night. This has been caused by a large leak on our main pipeline servicing all areas. Unfortunately the awful weather and the sheer volume of ground water everywhere has hampered the search for this leak.
Text alerts were sent out immediately on Friday night (6th March) when supply had to be turned off. A number of text alerts have been sent out each day since then. We believe a disruption in mobile phone coverage in a number of areas, particularly Feenone and Carrowniskey, has resulted in several people not receiving these texts.
If you have not already given us your mobile number for these text alerts, please do so as soon as possible.
In the last hour (around 10.20am, Tuesday 10th March), a large leak has been found on our main line servicing the majority of our water scheme. We are hopeful that this leak is the culprit of the problems over the last few days. Repair works are in motion at the moment and we will hopefully have more news in the next 3 hours. Another text alert will be sent out by 2pm to update all customers on our mobile phone listing.
On behalf of the Killeen Group Water Scheme, I wish to thank Austin Francis O'Malley and Johnny McGreal for their trojan efforts in the most awful weather conditions over the last few days.

Water supply interruptions June 2018
We would like to explain exactly what has been happening to your water supply over the last week. Firstly, we would like to assure you that the water levels at Lough Cumnel (our water source) are fine, despite the dry weather this last month.
Due to a combination of factors, air has entered the pipes coming down from the lake to our water treatment plant. This reduces and sometimes stops water flow through the pipes. Our water treatment plant requires a certain level of pressure and supply of this raw (untreated) water to allow it to produce the amount of clean treated water that we require on our water scheme. Normally the plant can produce more water than we require daily (particularly at night time) and fills a treated water reserve tank. This tank normally gets topped up every night, as our demand decreases. Unfortunately, this has not been happening over the last couple of weeks, as air is reducing the water flow into the water plant.
We have tried daily to release this air from the pipe system (all the way from the lake to the plant) but it returns again every day. As production of water is severely reduced, we have also had to reduce the water demand - i.e. turning off water to all or some areas at different times of the day or night. We have tried our utmost to ensure everyone gets some water for a period every day.
As for solutions to this issue - we have a team of engineers on site today attempting to clear the air from the pipes again today and replace some equipment that may have added to our problems. But in the long-term we need to replace a relatively short section of old piping into our water treatment plant. We have been unable to carry out this upgrade of piping as we have yet to secure the go-ahead from some landowners, despite years of negotiations.
We sincerely apologise and understand your frustrations at the constant interruptions to water supply. Please believe that we are doing our utmost to solve these issues as quickly as possible. We would also ask anyone who is not receiving our text alerts to provide us with a mobile phone number as soon as you can.
